Can somebody help me with some basic questions regarding vehicle registration in Maryland please?

I’ll be another country for three month in the summer, I figured why pay insurance when I’m not even driving in the states I face two options:

1. Pay $135 to keep my geico account open
2. Return tag and come back and get all new insurance again.

here are the questions:
1. can I keep my car in my parent’s garage without insurance in maryland? (keeping the tag, if not, what are the chances the government find out or do they get a report from geico or are they going to do anything?)

2. Do I get a refund on the registration fee I paid to the motor vehicle administration? if not, how much does register an 92 camry cost?

The best thing to do is call or stop by a Maryland Dmv office. Many states will let you bring your plates to dmv and be held for a set period of time. Dmv will give you a receipt for your plates, you call geico tell them what your doing and they too suspend your insurance after they get a copy of the plate receipt. No all states are the same but this method is used in many. You are not the only person in the world who go out of town for extended times. This is a very common thing in metro NY for example. When you return, you call geico first, get proof of insurance bring that proof to dmv and pick back up your plates. If they will not let you do so then I would surrender the plates and suspend the insurance. Geico is a good company and again people do this all the time. The state might issue you credit for the unsued part of the resistration and then credit that when you return. The only people that can give you the latest information on that is the Maryland DMV.
